I’m part of a pretty big group of moms online. We all have March (or close to it) babies, which means we are all going through similar things at the same time. Recently, the topic of toddler beds came up. Obviously, there was a TON of varying opinions.
My hope was to skip the toddler bed. I was planning to move Ben straight to a regular bed. I also found out I was planning to transition him much earlier than most. Ideally, he’ll be moving to a bed this summer. I have a couple reasons for this.
- Travel. My boy does not sleep in a pack and play. And honestly, a hotel crib is the tiniest thing ever. He won’t fit in that for very long. August brings the beach, and he will need a place to sleep. Which will most likely be our bed or a cot mattress on the floor.
- Safety. I would much rather he fall out of bed (which bed rails should prevent) than climb out of his crib. His crib is high and the idea of him flipping over the side scares the crap out of me.
- Other babies. Only one baby needs to be in a crib at a time. No, there are no plans of any future babies anytime soon. We have a friend who is about halfway through her second pregnancy and has a 2 year old. He’s old enough to say that he doesn’t want to give up his crib. Ugh….I do not want to argue with a 2 year old.
Ok, why skip the toddler bed? If there is another baby, I’ll either need to buy a second crib mattress, or transition him then anyway. Seems like a silly extra expense. Second, when he is in his “own bed” I know it will be a challenge to get him to stay in bed and go to sleep. Right now he usually flips around and plays with his animals for 15-30 minutes. I won’t fit in a toddler bed. I have every intention of laying down with him to get him to go to sleep. I hope that works……
What are your plans? Or what worked for you?
