We had to go cold turkey. It was time. About a month ago I tried. He had a great night the first try. It seemed like he was spending his first 30 minutes in bed trying to break out of it anyway, so I didn’t wrap him. The first night, he slept from 8pm until 3:30am. Not too shabby. The next night wasn’t as great but it wasn’t bad. The third night he woke up. A lot. I swaddled him by midnight and he slept well after that. And so, we returned to the swaddle.
Now my boy rolls over. He caught on to back to front rolling on July 3rd and now we can’t stop him. This was fine when he was sleeping until 3am, working on breaking out of his swaddle until 3:30am, and then using his arms to get him flipped and not really being upset about it until 4:30am. I am perfectly fine with not getting up until 4:30am. Well, that lasted less than a week. By Saturday night he could flip fully swaddled. This makes for an unhappy baby. He went to sleep happily after I unwrapped him and let him lay partially on his side, partially on his belly (how has this kid already started mimicking my sleeping position?). So Sunday night we tried to put him to bed unswaddled. He wore one of those Carter’s sleep gown things. He liked that last time I attempted the deswaddle. It felt like he was up all night long.
Yesterday we had his 4 month pediatrician appointment. Our pediatrician recommends cry-it-out at this age. I can’t do it. She also wants me to start on some food before the next time we see her. I hadn’t plan to start until 6 months. Luckily we see her next when he is almost 6 and a half months. I could start at like 5 months 3 weeks and feel like I satisfied both of us. Although…I really don’t want to start solids at the shore. So maybe he’ll have to wait until 6 months anyway. Oh well 😉
Last night we tried footie pajamas. It took a while for him to go to sleep in the crib, maybe 30 or 40 minutes. He was exhausted, but he thought it was time to play. I had to sit next to him for him to finally go down. Once he was though, we had a decent night. I had been in the habit of bringing him to bed after his first wake-up. Then we could both go back to sleep. But, he had a tendency to want to eat just about every hour once he was in bed with me. Clearly this had to stop. We had a few re-bink moments last night, but he wasn’t up to eat until after 3am. And he went right back down in the crib!! I brought him into bed around 6am thinking he was up for the day. He ate and fell asleep until 9:45am!
Please, please, please, let this be good things to come. I would hate for this to just be the shots and baby tylenol making him sleep more. Last night was great 🙂
